ETRUSCAN SITES, HILLTOP TOWNS, WINERY VISIT, TUSCAN MEAL

The Chianti region has been inhabited at least since the Etruscan times, our ancestors, the pre-romans who left their imprint in the tuscan culture as well as in the archeological sites such as the etruscan tombs all around Castellina in Chianti, Barberino Valdelsa and so on.

The struggles between Florence and Siena, the military legacy established to control borders and villages resulted not only in the famous code of arm today used as symbol of the Chianti Classico region and wines, the BLACK ROOSTER as we would say "Gallo Nero", but it resulted in a typical architecture you will be able to savour in the fortified and walled villages like Radda, Castellina, Volpaia, Vertine and in castles like Castello di Brolio, Rocca di Castagnoli, Castello di Meleto, old abbeys like Badia a Coltibuono.

Running through the area, the scenic road SR222 which connects Florence and Siena so both cities are good home bases to consider a drive which allows several stop options along the way considering there are more than 200 wine and olive oil producers in big size or as family business, farms raising the local Cinta Senese pigs and wildboards.
